Irritable Bowel Syndrome Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment

A specialist isn't usually necessary in the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome

Current guidelines make it easier for family physicians and internists to diagnose irritable bowel syndrome. A key tool is a good patient history. The doctor will check for possible alarm symptoms that might signal a more serious disease. If none are found, many doctors will feel comfortable making a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome based on the symptoms of frequent diarrhea or constipation, sometimes with bloating and abdominal pain. Often, blood tests will be ordered. Many doctors find additional procedures unnecessary.
